Ethereum node storage requirements decrease via EIP-4444
The implementation of EIP-4444 is significantly altering Ethereum node requirements by introducing partial history expiry. This optimization allows execution clients to prune pre-Merge historical data, reducing storage needs by approximately 300 to 500 GB.
With these changes, new nodes can synchronize in under half a day. While full nodes and validators can now operate on more modest hardware—potentially using less than 0.5 TB of storage with aggressive settings—archive nodes will continue to store the complete blockchain history for analytical purposes.
Major execution clients, including Geth, Nethermind, Besu, Erigon, and Reth, have already shipped support for these configurations. This shift aims to improve network decentralization by making it easier for users to run nodes on consumer-grade hardware.
