Ethereum roadmap expands to include privacy and quantum security
Ethereum is shifting its long-term development focus from basic scalability toward a broader set of technical priorities, including privacy, quantum security, and protocol simplification. While the network has historically relied on Layer 2 rollups to increase transaction capacity, developers are now exploring cryptographic technologies to allow for private transactions that do not expose all data on a public ledger.
To address future technological shifts, the roadmap includes preparations for quantum-resistant infrastructure to protect against potential threats from quantum computing. On the scaling front, the ecosystem continues to expand through Layer 2 networks, which currently offer significantly lower costs than Layer 1. Future upgrades, such as the planned Glamsterdam upgrade in 2026, aim to restructure block creation and improve Layer 1 scaling.
Further developments like the Hegotá upgrade are expected to focus on censorship resistance and native account abstraction. These efforts aim to support a massive increase in transaction capacity, with some architectural goals targeting over 100,000 transactions per second through advancements like full Danksharding.
