Ethereum sees surge in whale accumulation and Bitfinex short positions

Ethereum is experiencing divergent market signals as large-scale holders increase accumulation while bearish bets rise on major exchanges. Transactions exceeding $1 million surged by nearly 500% over the past week, with large wallets adding more than 320,000 ETH, valued at approximately $864 million.

Conversely, Bitfinex has reported a massive spike in ETH short positions, reaching approximately 73,056 ETH. This represents a 280% weekly jump in bearish exposure and marks the highest level of shorts on the exchange in 51 months. The surge in shorting comes despite ETH recovering roughly 86% from its mid-year lows.

Market analysts note that Ethereum is approaching a significant supply zone between $2,722 and $2,822. The accumulation of extreme short positions on Bitfinex could lead to heightened volatility, potentially resulting in a short squeeze if the price continues to climb and triggers margin calls.
