Ethereum roadmap: Vitalik Buterin unveils 2030 vision

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined a long-term technical roadmap to transform the network into a 'cryptographic world computer' by 2030. This vision involves a fundamental architectural shift from a traditional blockchain, where every node repeats every computation, to a hybrid system that utilizes advanced cryptography to verify off-chain computations.

Key to this transition is the use of zero-knowledge proofs (such as SNARKs and STARKs), which allow specialized machines to perform heavy workloads while the rest of the network verifies the results through compact mathematical proofs. This approach aims to increase scalability, reduce hardware requirements for nodes, and enhance privacy by encrypting sensitive data like balance queries.

Buterin identified the Hegota upgrade, planned for 2027, as a potential turning point that may serve as the last 'normal' fork recognizable to developers accustomed to the network's 2015-era architecture. Following Hegota, the focus will shift toward recursive STARKs, formal verification, and quantum-resistant security. Other technical milestones include the PeerDAS mechanism for efficient data availability sampling and the FOCIL proposal (EIP-7805) to improve censorship resistance through inclusion lists.
