Ethereum unstaking queue surges following MetaMask security incident

The Ethereum unstaking queue has surged significantly in early October, reaching levels as high as 850,000 ETH. This spike represents a substantial increase from late September and marks one of the longest exit lines seen this year.

A primary driver for this movement is a security incident involving MetaMask Staking. Following an infrastructure compromise where block rewards were briefly diverted, MetaMask took preemptive measures to exit approximately 17,000 validators, totaling roughly 523,000 ETH. While MetaMask stated that no user wallets or sensitive data were affected, the move was necessary to mitigate risks associated with potentially compromised signing keys.

Other factors contributing to the unstaking trend include market profit-taking and shifts in liquidity staking strategies. As of early October, the total amount of staked ETH remains around 43.9 million, representing approximately 35% of the total supply. The current annual percentage rate (APR) for staking has shown a gradual recovery, stabilizing around 2.63%. Due to network limitations designed to maintain stability, the estimated wait time for exiting the validator set is approximately 13 to 15 days.
