Ethics head resigns from La Libertad College of Public Accountants

Carmelo Gilberto Martell Aburto has resigned from his position as president of the Ethics Committee of the Colegio de Contadores Públicos de La Libertad (CCPLL) in Trujillo, Peru. During an Extraordinary General Assembly, Martell stated that he stepped down because he lacked the necessary tools to ensure fair disciplinary actions, claiming that some colleagues had been sanctioned unjustly.

Martell’s resignation comes at a time when more than a dozen accountants are facing pending disciplinary processes. His departure follows his involvement in signing sanctions for six members and proposing suspensions for eight others.

Additionally, the CCPLL General Assembly rejected a proposal by the Board of Directors, led by Dean Miguel Ángel Arancibia Cueva, to amend the statutes. The proposed change would have granted the Board the power to appoint the Tribunal of Honor, the body responsible for reviewing appeals. Critics argued this move would have allowed the same authority to control both the initial disciplinary process and the subsequent appeals process.
