Ethiopia and US agree to strengthen defense and security ties

Ethiopia and the United States have agreed to strengthen their defense and security cooperation to enhance regional stability in the Horn of Africa. The agreement focuses on improving the operational capacity of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) through expanded training programs, intelligence sharing, and logistical support.

High-level meetings held at the Pentagon on August 19 and 20, 2026, involved a senior Ethiopian delegation led by Major General Teshome Gemechu and Brian J. Ellis, the Pentagon's Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs. The discussions aimed to establish a more comprehensive strategic framework for military and diplomatic cooperation, coordinated largely through the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).

The partnership comes amid heightened instability in East Africa and follows a period of diplomatic tension regarding the Tigray conflict and Ethiopia’s memorandum of understanding with Somaliland. For the United States, the cooperation is viewed as critical for countering militant organizations like Al-Shabaab and securing Red Sea shipping lanes. For Ethiopia, improved security stability is considered a prerequisite for economic recovery and potential debt restructuring with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
