AFCON hosting bids intensify as Ethiopia enters 2028 race

The race to host future editions of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is intensifying. Ethiopia has officially submitted its bid to host the 2028 tournament, seeking to return to the continental stage for the first time since 1976. Ethiopia faces competition from Morocco, which possesses modern facilities and extensive experience, and a joint bid from South Africa and Botswana.

In preparation for the 2027 AFCON, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, a Confederation of African Football (CAF) delegation is currently conducting inspections in Kenya. The assessment includes venues in Nairobi and the potential inclusion of Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret as a competition venue.

Looking further ahead to 2032 and 2036, Guinea has expressed interest in a joint bid with Senegal to host the tournament, aiming to leverage shared infrastructure and resources.
