Ethiopia closes embassy in Eritrea and expels 10 diplomats

Ethiopia has announced the closure of its embassy in Asmara and expelled ten Eritrean diplomats, declaring them persona non grata. The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry stated the decision was a response to Eritrea’s “direct and indirect acts of hostility and belligerence” and activities that pose a direct threat to Ethiopia’s national security, citing violations of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The expelled diplomats were given 48 hours to leave the country.

In response, Eritrea has broken all diplomatic ties with Ethiopia. Eritrean officials characterized Ethiopia’s actions as part of a long-term agenda to secure sovereign access to the Red Sea through the invasion of coastal zones. Eritrea also accused Ethiopia of arming and training various armed opposition groups to facilitate regime change.

The diplomatic breakdown occurs amid heightened regional instability, including renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia involving the Tigray People's Liberation Front and other groups. Additionally, reports surfaced of an explosion at the Ethiopian National Defense Force headquarters in Addis Ababa.
