Ethiopia conflict escalates as fighting spreads to northern regions
Renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia between the federal government and a coalition of seven armed groups, including the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), has caused a sharp escalation in violence across the Tigray, Amhara, and Afar regions.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reported a surge in casualties, noting that over 420 war-wounded patients arrived at hospitals in Korem and Alamata between September 22 and 25, while more than 300 wounded individuals reached Suhul Hospital in Shire by September 25. Due to deteriorating security, MSF has suspended operations at Alamata Hospital.
The TPLF has reportedly seized airports and launched attacks into the Afar and Amhara states, claiming a defensive war against Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government. In the Afar region, the town of Erebti fell following heavy artillery fire, and humanitarian sources estimate that at least 150,000 people have been displaced from the area.
Ethiopian Army Chief of Staff Birhanu Jula accused Egypt, Eritrea, and Sudan of supporting the rebel groups. Sudan has officially rejected these claims, labeling them baseless. Meanwhile, communication in Tigray remains heavily restricted, with significant disruptions to telephone and internet services reported since late September.
