Ethiopia's Abiy Ahmed demands Red Sea access amid Tigray conflict

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been unanimously re-elected to a third term as he navigates intensifying domestic conflict and deteriorating regional relations. Following his swearing-in, Abiy reiterated Ethiopia's demand for access to the Red Sea, describing maritime access as critical to the nation's “civilisation” and promising to work toward an outlet through “give and take” principles.

This demand comes amid a resurgence of violence in the northern Tigray region, where federal forces have recently retaken the capital, Mekelle, from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The renewed fighting threatens the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement. Ethiopia has accused Eritrea, Egypt, and Sudan of supporting opposition forces in the north.

In response to Ethiopia's maritime ambitions, leaders from Egypt, Eritrea, Sudan, and Somalia met in New Alamein, Egypt. They issued a joint declaration asserting that the governance of the Red Sea is the exclusive responsibility of its littoral states, rejecting actions that could destabilize the region or affect Nile water rights.
