Ethiopia establishes six-month caretaker administration for Tigray

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced the establishment of a six-month caretaker administration for the Tigray region. This decision follows renewed military conflict between federal forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which has effectively disrupted previous peace agreements.

The interim government will be led by five appointed officials, including the mayor of Mekelle. The administration’s mandate includes restoring public services, repairing war-damaged infrastructure, facilitating the return of displaced persons, and ensuring security. A primary objective is to create a stable political environment to hold free and transparent regional elections within the six-month period.

In Mekelle, registration for a civilian reintegration program for former combatants has resumed. While some former fighters expressed a desire to avoid returning to conflict, others reported facing pressure from the TPLF to rejoin military units. The TPLF has publicly denounced individuals cooperating with the federal government as traitors.

Geopolitical tensions have also risen, with Addis Ababa accusing Eritrea of supporting the TPLF, an allegation Eritrea has denied.
