Ethiopia: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appoints 62 state ministers
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has appointed 62 state ministers across various federal ministries and government institutions. These appointments, announced on October 10, 2026, follow the recent parliamentary approval of the country’s cabinet and represent a further stage in the formation of the administration, referred to as the Medemer Government.
The new officials will serve in key sectors including foreign affairs, defense, finance, justice, education, health, and economic development, as well as the Prime Minister’s Office and the Government Communication Service. The appointments cover 22 ministries.
Notably, the list includes several individuals from outside the ruling Prosperity Party. Eyob Mesafint, leader of the Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice (EZEMA), has been named a state minister at the Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure. Additionally, Keria Ibrahim, a former Speaker of the House of Federation, returns to government as a state minister at the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs.
In related political developments, the opposition Enat Party held its second regular general assembly in Addis Ababa, electing Yohannes Shewakena as its new president. The party also appointed Keria Ibrahim as its vice president.
