Ethiopia receives 12 Russian Su-35 fighter jets

Ethiopia Russia Su-35 S-400 Abiy Ahmed

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the delivery of 12 Russian Su-35 multirole fighter jets during the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow. The aircraft arrived approximately one year ahead of the schedule established under a prior agreement with the Russian government.

In addition to the fighter jets, Ethiopia plans to acquire four S-400 air defense system batteries, though no specific delivery timeline or contract value has been disclosed. The Prime Minister stated that these acquisitions are intended to strengthen national sovereignty and provide the capability to “preemptively deter aggression.”

The military modernization occurs amid significant regional instability, including renewed fighting in Ethiopia’s Tigray, Afar, and Amhara regions, as well as heightened diplomatic tensions with neighboring Eritrea. While Abiy Ahmed reported the delivery of 12 jets, Rosoboronexport, the Russian state arms exporter, noted that the first batch delivered at Zhukovsky consisted of two aircraft.
