Ethiopia Tigray conflict: UAE and Saudi Arabia roles

Renewed fighting in Ethiopia’s Tigray region is threatening the stability of the Horn of Africa and the validity of the November 2022 Pretoria peace agreement. The conflict involves the Ethiopian federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and its allied groups.

External powers are taking distinct approaches to the crisis. The United Arab Emirates has expressed public solidarity with the Ethiopian government, condemning attacks by the TPLF and calling for the protection of civilians and adherence to the Pretoria Agreement. While the UAE has reaffirmed support for Ethiopia’s sovereignty, it has not confirmed whether it is providing military assistance.

In contrast, Saudi Arabia has focused on regional diplomacy, having previously helped broker rapprochement between Ethiopia and Eritrea. Reports indicate that Saudi Arabia has offered to mediate between the two nations in 2025.
