Ethiopian Airlines flight forced to return after Israeli landing denial

An Ethiopian Airlines cargo flight bound for Tel Aviv was forced to return to Addis Ababa after Israeli authorities denied it permission to land. The decision was made after officials reviewed the crew manifest and discovered that one of the pilots held Indonesian citizenship.

Indonesia does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Israel. This incident is the first widely reported case involving new, tightened aviation security restrictions implemented by Israel. These rules prohibit flight crew members—including dual nationals—from countries without diplomatic ties to Israel from operating flights into the country.

The restrictions were introduced following a September 30 incident involving a Flydubai flight, where an Omani co-pilot allegedly attempted to seize control of the aircraft and crash it into Ben Gurion Airport.

Ethiopian Airlines described the situation as an administrative mistake, noting they were unaware the pilot was ineligible for the route. After returning to Ethiopia, the Indonesian pilot was replaced, and the aircraft successfully completed its journey to Israel.
