Ethiopian forces and Tigrayan troops clash near Abala

Renewed hostilities have erupted in northern Ethiopia, marked by intense overnight fighting between Ethiopian federal forces and Tigrayan troops near the strategic town of Abala in the Afar region. Federal forces reportedly utilized drones to repel rebel attempts to enter the town.

Conflict has expanded across multiple fronts, with Tigrayan forces taking control of the airports in Mekelle, Axum, and Shire, leading to the suspension of Ethiopian Airlines flights. The Tigray authorities, led by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), have accused the federal government of launching a genocidal invasion, while Addis Ababa describes the situation as a total offensive by the TPLF against government positions in Afar and Amhara.

The escalation has triggered significant civilian distress. Reports indicate that young men are fleeing Tigray for Addis Ababa to avoid forced military recruitment. In some instances, families have reportedly paid fees to secure the release of young men taken by local administrations. Residents in cities such as Mekelle and Adigrat are reportedly stockpiling food and cash as fears of a wider war grow.
