Mekelle: Ethiopian federal forces seize Tigray capital and airport

Ethiopian federal forces and pro-government militias have reportedly seized control of Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region, and Alula Aba Nega International Airport. This military advance follows a resurgence of hostilities that began on September 23, involving a seven-party rebel coalition led by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).

TPLF leaders and fighters have been observed withdrawing from the city, with TPLF leader Debretsion Gebremichael announcing a transition to guerrilla warfare tactics. While federal forces have entered parts of the city and secured the airport, the situation remains fluid, with reports of gunfire on the outskirts and concerns from residents regarding potential looting and a breakdown of law and order due to the absence of security personnel.

The escalation has significant regional implications. Ethiopia has officially severed diplomatic ties with Eritrea, accusing it of supporting the rebel alliance alongside Sudan and Egypt, though these nations have denied the allegations. Meanwhile, leaders from Egypt, Somalia, Sudan, and Eritrea have reportedly met in Egypt to discuss the risk of the conflict expanding into a wider regional war.
