Ethiopian refugees killed in Sudan amid Ethiopia‑Tigray clashes

Sudan’s refugee department announced that projectiles fell into several Ethiopian refugee camps after renewed fighting between the Ethiopian National Defense Force and Tigray forces along the border. The strikes caused a number of deaths and injuries among the roughly 63,000 Ethiopian refugees hosted in camps such as Tanidba and Um Rakuba in Al‑Qadarif state. The department warned that continued military activity could trigger a larger influx of refugees and heighten security and humanitarian risks.

The clashes follow the breakdown of a 2022 peace agreement that had paused fighting since November 2020. Sudan’s security council, chaired by Abdel Fattah al‑Burhan, also met to review the country’s overall security situation.

The refugee office said, “المواجهات التي اندلعت بين قوات إقليم تقراي والجيش الإثيوبي على الشريط الحدودي أدت إلى سقوط مقذوفات داخل عدد من معسكرات اللاجئين، مما أسفر عن وقوع عدد من الوفيات والإصابات.”
