Ethiopian violence drives 50,000 refugees into Kenya
An estimated 50,000 people have crossed from southern Ethiopia into Kenya to escape violence stemming from a regional dispute between the leaders of the Oromia and Somali regional states. Since the movement began around October 22, the number of displaced persons has risen steadily, according to the UN refugee agency, UNHCR.
Displaced families are facing urgent shortages of food, clean water, sanitation, and healthcare. Many refugees are staying in schools, churches, or with host communities in Moyale, while others are being processed in camps. The Kenya Red Cross and UNHCR are coordinating emergency responses to provide medical care, nutrition monitoring, and temporary shelter.
The conflict has also disrupted the border economy, leaving cargo trucks stranded on both sides of the frontier and interrupting trade in the Moyale region.
