Ethiopian youth football team vanishes after Gothia Cup in Gothenburg

Around 20 Ethiopian youths, aged 14–17, and several team leaders disappeared on the final day of the Gothia Cup football tournament in Gothenburg, Sweden. Police discovered the group had left the school where they were staying without following normal departure procedures, and no member has returned to Ethiopia.

Swedish police say the disappearance appears to be a voluntary act, possibly linked to illegal migration, and there is no indication of human trafficking or other criminal activity. The Gothia Cup organisation filed a precautionary report with the police. Authorities are cooperating with the Swedish Migration Agency, border police and foreign agencies, and the group will be flagged at passport checks or if any member seeks asylum. A team leader previously emailed that the players were "safe and well" and in contact with families, but did not confirm their whereabouts.
