Ethiopia's Amhara and Tigray Conflicts Draw International Concern

On 15 July 2026 Ethiopia launched a National Dialogue Conference in Addis Ababa, promoted by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as a step toward reconciliation. The event took place while the Tigray region, still reeling from the 2020‑2022 war, was largely excluded and faced a deepening humanitarian and economic blockade. International Crisis Group warned that the volatile relationship among Addis Ababa, Mekelle and Asmara could spark renewed violence.

A separate panel on 31 July 2026, organized by the Institute for Peace and Security Studies, called on the European Union, United Nations and other bodies to give greater attention to the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia’s Amhara region. Experts highlighted the fighting between federal forces and the Fano militia, noting its severe economic, social and humanitarian impacts, and urged third‑party mediation and long‑term peace efforts that address political grievances and economic discrimination.
