Ethnic minority traditions preserved through dance and festivals in Vietnam

Various ethnic minority communities in Vietnam continue to preserve unique cultural traditions through folk performances and seasonal festivals.

In Thanh Son, the Muong people maintain the art of 'sênh tiền' dance. This performance utilizes a specialized musical instrument crafted from three hard wooden bars integrated with metal coins, serrated edges, and small bells. The dance requires high coordination, as performers use rhythmic tapping, sliding, and shaking motions to create a melodic sound that blends with their graceful body movements.

In Dong Cuong, Lao Cai province, the Tay Khao people celebrate the New Rice Festival at the Dong Cuong Temple. Held annually to mark the harvest, the festival includes rituals such as processions of agricultural products, incense offerings, and traditional folk games. The event serves as a spiritual connection to nature and ancestors, specifically honoring the Mother Goddess and historical heroes while preserving the community's cultural identity.
