Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade hosts exhibition on historical Serbian wedding customs
An exhibition at the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade is showcasing the diverse wedding customs of Serbia from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Curated by Tijana Čolak Antić Popović and ethnologist Saša Srećković, the display explores how marriage functioned as both a social and economic project for community survival.
The exhibition highlights unique historical practices, such as marriage arrangements in the Pirot region around 1900, where the groom did not participate in the proposal process. Instead, the groom's father and other representatives would visit the bride's father to negotiate the union. The collection illustrates how marriage served to unite families for mutual support in agricultural and communal life.
