ETIAS launch delayed to 2027; dual Estonian‑Australian citizens must use EU passport

The European Union has removed the planned 2026 start date for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), indicating the scheme will likely be postponed until 2027. No official launch date has been set, and the EU says a specific date will be announced months before the system becomes operational. ETIAS will require travelers from visa‑exempt countries—including Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States—to obtain an electronic travel authorisation before visiting the 30 participating European countries. The authorisation will cost €20 for most applicants and be valid for three years or until the passport expires.

For individuals holding both Estonian and Australian citizenship, the guidance is clear: they must travel to ETIAS‑required European countries using their Estonian passport. The ETIAS application will not allow a dual citizen who indicates EU citizenship to apply with a non‑EU passport, and providing false information could cause border‑control problems. Holders of dual citizenship should ensure their Estonian passport remains valid and avoid any attempts to obtain an ETIAS authorisation with their Australian passport.
