ETIAS travel authorization scam targets travelers ahead of delayed EU rollout

Travelers planning trips to the European Union are being warned to avoid fraudulent websites offering the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) service. Although the rollout of this electronic travel authorization has been delayed, more than 150 scam websites are already active, mimicking official EU portals to solicit money and sensitive personal data.

ETIAS is intended for citizens of countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen area. The system is not yet operational, with implementation expected in the final quarter of 2026. Once active, the application fee is set to be 20 euros, though travelers under 18 and over 70 will be exempt from the fee.

Experts, including Luke Petherbridge of the travel association ABTA, have emphasized that travelers cannot and should not apply for ETIAS at this time. Using unofficial sites poses significant risks, including financial loss and identity theft through the collection of passport details and credit card information. Authorities advise that there will be only one official channel for applications once the system is officially launched.
