Manchester City found guilty of 114 Premier League financial breaches

Manchester City has been found guilty by an independent commission of breaching Premier League financial regulations on 114 of 115 charges brought against the club. The investigation, covering the period from the 2009-10 to 2017-18 seasons, concluded that the club used “sham” commercial contracts to artificially inflate revenue and disguise funding. The commission estimated the total amount involved in this disguised funding scheme was approximately £830.69 million.

In response, Manchester City has signaled its intention to appeal the verdict. The club plans to argue that sponsorship payments originated from the Abu Dhabi government rather than the club’s owners, Abu Dhabi United Group.

Etihad Airways, the club’s primary sponsor, has expressed deep concern regarding the Premier League’s handling of the investigation. The airline has rejected any implication of involvement in improper commercial arrangements and is considering legal action against the Premier League, citing a lack of transparency and selective disclosure of information that has damaged its reputation.

Additionally, several Premier League players are reportedly consulting legal counsel regarding potential lawsuits against Manchester City. These players claim that the club’s financial breaches impacted competitive results, thereby affecting their ability to earn performance-related bonuses.
