Etiquette for returning school entrance gifts

Regarding school entrance gifts, it is generally considered that a formal return gift is not mandatory, as these gifts are intended to support a child's new life rather than being a direct transaction like wedding or birth celebrations.

While not strictly required, providing a token of appreciation is recommended to maintain good relationships with neighbors. If a person chooses to give a return gift for a 5,000 yen contribution, a common guideline is to provide something valued between one-third and one-half of the original amount, roughly 1,700 to 2,500 yen. Practical items such as sweets, coffee, or towels are appropriate choices.

It is important to consider local customs and the specific relationship with the giver. If the giver intended the money for the child's benefit, an overly expensive gift might cause them unnecessary concern. The most important aspect is expressing sincere gratitude promptly, ideally within one month of the entrance ceremony.
