EU adopts ELV rule requiring 25% recycled plastic in new vehicles

On 29 June, the EU Council of Ministers approved the End‑of‑Life Vehicles (ELV) regulation, which mandates that at least 25 % of the plastic used in newly‑produced cars be made from recycled material. The measure, already passed by the European Parliament, aims to boost circular‑economy practices in the automotive sector. The rule will be published in the EU Official Journal and come into force two years later, giving manufacturers time to adjust their designs and supply chains.

The regulation is part of a broader EU strategy to increase resource efficiency and reduce waste from vehicle production and disposal across member states.
