EU adopts new genetic editing rules for allergen‑free tomatoes and wheat

On 1 August 2026 the European Parliament approved a new regulatory framework for New Genetic Techniques (NTGs). The rules treat crops edited with precise DNA changes as conventional varieties, allowing faster market entry across the EU.

Spanish researcher Antonio Granell, a professor at the University of Valencia and founder of the biotech firm Madeinplant, used NTGs to create tomato lines with seven targeted DNA edits that eliminate allergenic proteins, and similar edits in wheat to remove gluten. The framework is expected to speed commercialization of these foods, provide safer options for people with allergies or celiac disease, and reduce pesticide use and waste, contributing to more sustainable agriculture.
