Deutsche Bahn radio outage halts German rail traffic
A nationwide failure of the digital railway radio system (GSM‑R) on Tuesday night caused the German rail network to stop for about two hours. The outage affected long‑distance, regional and S‑Bahn services as well as private operators such as Metronom. The first trains resumed around 00:30, but many journeys still experience long delays and cancellations while DB technicians work to restore full service.
Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) said the railways remain reliable but demanded a full investigation of the incident and faster activation of emergency procedures, warning that extreme heat could trigger further problems. Bavaria’s transport minister Christian Bernreiter criticised the lack of a backup concept and called for an improved emergency plan.
TUI Germany chief Benjamin Jacobi urged travellers to allow a four‑hour buffer for airport connections after the chaos. ARAG expert Tobias Klingelhöfer reminded passengers of their EU‑mandated rights: a 25 % fare refund for delays of at least one hour, 50 % for two hours or more, plus care obligations unless the delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances.
