EU adopts stricter return rules as European People's Party pushes for tougher migration measures

The European Union has introduced a new Return Regulation to complement the recently enacted EU Asylum Pact. The regulation creates a networked enforcement framework, allowing member states to recognise and execute removal decisions across borders. It expands detention periods to up to 24 months, introduces "Return Hubs" where people awaiting removal can be held outside the Schengen area, and enables the use of third‑country sites such as the Italian facilities in Albania.

At the same time, the European People's Party (EPP) adopted a resolution demanding even stricter migration controls. The EPP called for legislative steps to prevent illegal migration, support for the controversial return centres permitted by the new regulation, and a right for countries to reject asylum applications when migrants are used as political tools. German CDU politician Detlef Seif highlighted the upcoming EU summit in October as a venue for broader debate, noting domestic pressure from right‑wing parties ahead of regional elections.

Switzerland is preparing a consultation on adopting the regulation, reflecting its broader relevance beyond the EU. The combined legislative and political moves signal a shift toward a more coordinated and restrictive approach to migration management across Europe.
