EU advances digital sovereignty for AI and rail systems

European Parliament member Sunčana Glavak warned that Europe must close the artificial‑intelligence gap within the next five to ten years. She stressed that digital sovereignty is required for the EU to develop its own AI technologies, align them with European values and avoid becoming a “digital colony” dependent on non‑European providers.

MEP Brnjac added that railway infrastructure is a key component of Europe’s critical infrastructure. She noted that systems such as ERTMS depend on secure cloud services, data centres and AI, making them potential cyber‑attack targets. Brnjac linked this to the European Commission’s June 3 2026 package, which includes a Cloud and AI Act, Chip Act 2.0, an open‑source strategy and a digital‑energy AI plan, all aimed at reducing reliance on external digital service providers and strengthening EU capacity.
