EU AFIR regulation to transform electric vehicle charging by 2027

New European Union regulations under the AFIR regulation are set to transform the electric vehicle charging landscape starting January 1, 2027. The primary goal is to increase the simplicity, accessibility, and interoperability of the charging network.

A major change involves payment methods. For charging stations with a power output of 50 kW or higher, operators will be required to allow direct payments via contactless systems and bank cards. This eliminates the current necessity for drivers to download specific apps, create accounts, or subscribe to individual operator services before they can charge their vehicles.

Additionally, the regulations aim to improve price transparency. Users must be able to clearly understand charging costs through comparable tariffs based on actual consumption per kilowatt-hour. The rules also mandate better digital connectivity, ensuring infrastructure can provide real-time updates on station status.
