EU agrees new fisheries funding framework for 2028-2034

The EU Council of Agriculture and Fisheries has reached an agreement on a new framework for the Common Fisheries Policy for the 2028-2034 period. This agreement opens the door for funding the modernization and renewal of fishing fleets for the first time in 12 years.

In Greece, the development is seen as a major success for national interests. Greek Minister of Rural Development and Food, Margaritis Schoinas, noted that the funding will support the renewal of one of the oldest fleets in the EU, allowing for the purchase or construction of new vessels and investments in existing ones. The framework provides specific flexibility for small-scale coastal fisheries and allows for support even in areas with overfished stocks, provided restoration measures are implemented.

In Cyprus, Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Kostas Kadis stated that the agreement provides greater stability and predictability. The new regulations prioritize small-scale fishers and energy transition improvements, enabling Cyprus to access significant resources for fleet renewal and modernization.
