European agriculture faces severe drought losses and rising production costs

European agriculture is facing severe economic and production challenges due to extreme heat and drought. The European Commission estimates that drought-related losses across the EU for 2026 could range between 14 and 17 billion euros. The Joint Research Centre predicts significant yield decreases for several key crops, including soybean, fresh maize, sugar beets, grain maize, and potatoes.

In Poland, the agricultural sector is experiencing a significant downturn. The General Statistical Office (GUS) reported that the indicator for the change in the general situation of agricultural holdings (WZOS) fell to -41.1 in the first half of 2026, a sharp decline from the previous year. Farmers report that production is increasingly unprofitable due to high costs and low market prices.

To mitigate these pressures, the Polish government has introduced a support program. This includes a subsidy of 0.52 PLN per liter of diesel and up to 500 PLN per hectare for mineral fertilizers for purchases made between March 1 and August 31, 2026. The program is funded by 66.633 million euros from EU funds, supplemented by state budget resources. Applications for this support will be accepted by ARiMR from October 1 to October 23, 2026.
