EU e‑shop rules increase costs and impose AI transparency duties
From 2 August 2024 the EU AI Act adds obligations for online retailers that use AI chat‑bots or other generative AI. Firms must disclose AI use, provide transparent information to customers and label AI‑generated content where required. Violations can be fined up to €15 million or 3 % of worldwide turnover.
According to Heureka, which supports more than 50 000 Czech e‑shops, many operators are unprepared for the new duties. Heureka product‑lead Stanislav Sopko warned that e‑shops must verify where AI is used and fulfil information obligations.
A separate EU packaging‑waste regulation for e‑commerce takes effect on 12 August 2024. It requires mandatory testing, recyclability, labeling of packages and limits empty space in parcels to 50 % of volume by 2030. Industry representatives estimate the cost impact will range from a few thousand Czech crowns for small retailers to hundreds of millions for the largest platforms, with possible short‑term price increases for consumers.
Both measures aim to increase transparency and reduce environmental waste, but they add administrative burden and financial pressure on e‑shops across the Czech market.
