European Union implements AI Act to regulate artificial intelligence

The European Union is implementing the AI Act to establish a legal framework for artificial intelligence, prioritizing human rights and safety. The legislation categorizes AI technologies by risk level, banning certain practices such as social scoring, emotion recognition in workplaces, and real-time biometric identification in public spaces.

In Cyprus, the Office of the Commissioner for Electronic Communications and Postal Regulation (Ocecpr) is leading the implementation of these EU regulations. Proposed laws include significant penalties for violators, with fines potentially reaching €35 million. The regulatory framework also introduces an AI Regulatory Sandbox to allow startups and researchers to test innovations in controlled environments.

Experts note that while AI will not replace top IT professionals, it will fundamentally change their roles. The value of human workers is shifting from basic programming to critical thinking, systemic oversight, and the ability to verify AI outputs to prevent errors in sensitive sectors like medicine.
