EU AI Act mandates transparency and logging requirements
The European Union's AI Act is introducing significant transparency and record-keeping obligations for enterprises. While many businesses mistakenly believe requirements only apply to ‘high-risk’ systems, transparency mandates apply to various functions, including customer-facing chatbots, marketing content generation, and HR software used for applicant evaluation.
Key requirements include clearly disclosing AI interactions to users, automating the labeling of AI outputs at scale, and informing individuals when biometric or emotion-detection systems are in use. Additionally, enterprises utilizing general-purpose AI (GPAI) models must ensure they receive and pass along necessary technical documentation and training data summaries.
Regarding technical compliance, the deadline for logging requirements for high-risk AI systems has been adjusted. Obligations for stand-alone systems in Annex III will apply from December 2, 2027, while AI integrated into regulated products must comply by August 2, 2028. These rules require systems to automatically record events throughout their lifetime to allow for the tracing of risky situations and to support post-market monitoring. Current AI agent stacks often lack the necessary detail for these logs, as they frequently fail to capture the identity of the human requester, the specific tool arguments used, the specific policy version applied, or the direct link between a prompt and its resulting action.
