EU AI Act Transparency Rules Take Effect on August 2, 2026

On August 2, 2026 the European Union’s AI Act will enforce core transparency obligations for AI systems. Providers of chatbots and other automated tools must clearly inform users that they are interacting with an AI, and any synthetic content related to public interest, such as deepfakes or AI‑generated texts, must carry a mandatory disclosure unless a human has verified it. The Commission has issued guidelines on machine‑readable markings and watermark standards, recommending C2PA metadata. Violations can attract fines of up to €15 million or 3 % of worldwide annual turnover. Systems already on the market enjoy a transition period until December 2, 2026.

In parallel, India is drafting its own AI legislation focused on autonomous agents, with sandbox environments for high‑risk financial and public‑service applications, indicating a broader global move toward stricter AI governance.
