From 2 August 2026 the European Union’s AI Act will enforce the transparency obligations set out in Article 50. Companies that provide or use AI systems must inform users when they are interacting with a chatbot or other AI‑driven tool and must label AI‑generated images, audio, video and text with visible markers or machine‑readable metadata. The rules cover deep‑fakes, synthetic media and AI‑generated public‑interest text. Existing AI systems enjoy a four‑month transition period, with compliance required by 2 December 2026, while high‑risk AI requirements for employment and other sectors start on 2 December 2027. The regulation applies extraterritorially: any provider whose AI outputs reach EU residents is subject to the rules, regardless of where the company is based. Non‑compliance can lead to fines of up to €15 million or 3 % of worldwide annual turnover, whichever is higher. A new EU AI Office, created by the European Commission, together with national authorities, will monitor and enforce the regime.

The rollout affects businesses worldwide that use AI for customer‑facing chatbots, content creation, hiring tools or any service that reaches EU users. Companies are urged to inventory AI systems, assess risk tiers, and implement labeling and disclosure mechanisms before the August deadline to avoid penalties.
