EU Ambassador calls for institutional reform in Bangladesh to drive investment
European Union Ambassador Michael Miller has stated that Bangladesh requires strong institutions, independent oversight, and transparent governance to attract foreign and domestic investment. Speaking at the Bay of Bengal Conversation in Dhaka, Miller emphasized that these elements are essential for creating jobs for the nation's youth and withstanding geoeconomic, climate, and technological pressures.
As Bangladesh approaches graduation from least developed country status, the EU aims to transition from a traditional donor-recipient relationship toward a more balanced and reciprocal economic partnership. Miller indicated that the bloc is prepared to match Bangladesh’s ambition, including the potential exploration of a future free trade agreement.
Key requirements for deeper economic ties include the rule of law, respect for human rights and labor, environmental protection, and the completion of constitutional reforms. The EU expressed interest in matching investment with European technology, standards, and innovation, citing examples such as the Laldia Container Terminal port in Chattogram and the issuance of green bonds.
