EU and Canada prepare strategic agreements ahead of Montreal summit

The European Union and Canada are preparing a series of strategic agreements to strengthen economic ties, ahead of a summit scheduled for late October in Montreal. A draft joint statement, which has been circulated to the 27 EU member states for feedback, outlines a plan to build a deeper partnership focused on digital services, strategic raw materials, and energy cooperation.

Key components of the proposed agreements include a digital trade pact designed to facilitate safer and more cost-effective digital transactions, and enhanced cooperation between competition authorities. Additionally, the European Investment Bank may participate in Canadian strategic mineral mining projects. In the energy sector, the parties are exploring the potential for Canadian liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to Europe.

Other notable provisions include a joint purchase of 50 De Havilland firefighting aircraft to be deployed by 2030, and the initiation of discussions regarding Canada joining the European Erasmus program to foster research and educational ties.
