EU trade chief Maroš Šefčovič travels to Beijing for high-stakes trade talks

EU trade chief Maroš Šefčovič is traveling to Beijing on October 8 and 9 for high-stakes negotiations with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao. The mission aims to address a massive trade imbalance, with the EU's deficit with China reaching approximately 360 billion euros in 2025, or roughly one billion euros per day.

European leaders are increasingly concerned about a “China Shock 2.0,” where Chinese firms expand into high-tech manufacturing sectors like automotive, chemicals, and machinery. In response, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have proposed a new, rapid trade defense mechanism to the European Commission. This tool would allow the EU to quickly exclude goods or services from the market if a country engages in trade warfare.

The German Chamber of Commerce in China has urged for dialogue and sector-specific measures rather than broad tariffs, noting that 80 percent of surveyed companies expect consequences if negotiations fail. Key discussion points include securing access to strategic raw materials, such as rare earth elements, and addressing the surge of low-priced Chinese imports in 92 flagged product categories.
