EU and China reach preliminary trade agreement to ease tensions

The European Union and China have reached a preliminary trade agreement aimed at easing escalating commercial tensions and addressing the EU's growing trade deficit, which has reached approximately 1 billion euros per day. Following two days of negotiations in Beijing between EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, the two parties reached a broad understanding involving 16 points of consensus.

A central component of the deal involves the regulation of Chinese automotive exports. The agreement could reduce Chinese hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicle exports to the EU by more than 50 percent over the next four years, potentially preventing the import of several million vehicles. This measure is intended to protect European manufacturers from intense competition.

In exchange, China has agreed to reduce tariffs on up to 4 billion euros worth of European goods, including automotive parts, olive oil, and footwear. Additionally, the agreement includes measures to stabilize and facilitate the export licensing of rare earths and permanent magnets from China to the EU, ensuring a more predictable supply chain for European high-tech and automotive industries.

The provisional agreement must now undergo formal review and approval by the leaders of the 27 EU member states. Further ministerial-level discussions are planned for early 2027 to continue addressing trade imbalances and market access.
