EU and Germany weigh trade measures against Chinese competition
The European Union is intensifying efforts to counter Chinese competition through import duties and anti-dumping measures. While EU member states previously held differing views, recent discussions in Brussels have led to a breakthrough in unity, driven in part by the significant impact of cheap imports on European industries. European Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic noted that Beijing has promised to reduce hybrid car exports, which may serve as a signal of the EU's influence.
However, some leaders urge caution regarding protectionism. Michael Schumann, chairman of the German Federal Association for Economic Development and Foreign Trade, argues that while Chinese competition is real, it is not the primary cause of Europe's structural economic difficulties. He suggests that Germany and the EU should focus on addressing internal issues such as high energy costs, bureaucracy, and infrastructure underinvestment rather than relying solely on trade barriers. Schumann emphasizes that the goal should be rebalancing economic ties through dialogue rather than severing them.
