EU AI Act’s Article 50 Transparency Rules Take Effect Across Europe
On 2 August 2026 the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act entered its next phase as Article 50 on transparency became legally binding. The new obligations require that any AI system that interacts directly with a user must clearly disclose that it is artificial intelligence unless the interaction makes this obvious to a reasonably well‑informed person. Providers of generative AI must label synthetic content – images, audio, video or text – with a visible notice and, where required, a machine‑readable marker so platforms can detect AI‑generated material. Deep‑fake media must carry an explicit label, and systems that analyse emotions or perform biometric categorisation must inform the individuals concerned. Certain law‑enforcement uses are exempt from these rules. The regulation applies to both EU‑based providers and non‑EU companies that make AI services available to EU users or markets. Breaches can attract administrative fines of up to €15 million or 3 % of worldwide annual turnover, whichever is higher. Companies across the continent are publishing compliance checklists, SMB guides and impact analyses for UK firms as they adapt to the new disclosure regime.
