EU and OECD Unveil AI Literacy Framework for Schools

The European Commission and the Organisation for Economic Co‑operation and Development (OECD) released an AI literacy framework for primary and secondary education on 18 June. The “AiLit” framework sets out 19 competencies organized into four domains – interacting with AI, creating with AI, managing AI and shaping AI – and provides level‑based guidance and classroom activities for teachers.

The initiative, developed with input from more than 2,000 experts in over 100 countries and supported by the CodeAI network, aims to give students the technical knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to use generative AI responsibly and ethically. Executive Vice‑President for Social Rights Roxana Mînzatu said, “AI literacy is a fundamental competence for our young people; understanding and using AI responsibly is essential for Europe’s competitiveness and for protecting our democracy and social cohesion.”
