EU and Polish firms continue trade with Russian chemical companies

European Union member states, including Poland, have continued to trade with Russian chemical companies despite the ongoing war in Ukraine. Documentation reveals that European and Polish entities have purchased urea and ammonium nitrate from major Russian concerns, specifically Eurochem and Uralchem.

These Russian corporations are linked to the production of materials essential for explosives. Specifically, Eurochem and Uralchem are among several entities that produce over 75 percent of the chemicals required for manufacturing explosives used by the Russian military, such as components for Kh-101 missiles and 152 mm ammunition. The primary recipient of these chemicals in Russia is Specchimia, a company under the Rostec conglomerate, which is led by Sergey Chemezov, an associate of Vladimir Putin.

Polish security services had previously issued warnings regarding these transactions, citing risks of sabotage similar to the chemical explosions seen in Beirut. Between 2020 and 2026, Russian chemical companies generated an estimated 8.5 to 10 billion euros in revenue from fertilizer sales to the EU. Polish investors involved with these suppliers have reportedly been under scrutiny by the Internal Security Agency (ABW).
