EU and Serbian media bodies denounce threats against journalists Jelena Jovanović and Danica Vučenić

The European Union delegation issued its strongest condemnation of online threats directed at Montenegrin investigative journalist Jelena Jovanović, stating that “any form of violence, threats or harassment of journalists is unacceptable and has no place in a democratic society.” The EU called on Montenegro, a candidate country, to adopt a zero‑tolerance policy and provide institutional protection for journalists.

In Serbia, the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM), SafeJournalists and the Independent Journalists’ Association (UNS) also denounced a wave of threats aimed at N1 television reporter Danica Vučenić. The groups highlighted a message that threatened her family – “We will kill your loved ones, you mare” – and urged police and prosecutors to act swiftly, identify the perpetrators and ensure protection for the journalist and her newsroom. Both sets of statements demanded that the authorities treat such intimidation as a serious attack on media freedom and the safety of journalists.
